Prescott College is a private liberal arts college in Prescott, AZ.  This college was founded in 1966 and enjoys its reputation as a high quality experimental education provider.  Students of Prescott College live in Prescott, AZ.  The Ford Foundation gathered educators from around the US and challenged them to create an ideal college for the future, utilizing the best theories in learning to prepare students.  Prescott College is the result of this gathering in 1965.

Nearby apartments, condos and houses exist to rent or buy for student housing.  The main college campus is a short walk from downtown Prescott.  The undergraduate student body hovers around 800 students each class semester and the student to faculty ratio is 7:1, showing their commitment to a highly specialized education.  My Mother is an alumnus of Prescott College and still occasionally teaches a course there or provides leadership on a student project.  Her longtime career in child and family advocacy and her founding of Prevent Child Abuse Arizona can be partially attributed to her time at Prescott College!

A large draw for Prescott College students is the reputation Prescott has for being a mecca of outdoor activities.  The city itself is bordered by the Prescott National Forest on three sides providing forests for hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, fishing, sailing and mountain biking…just to name a few activities.  The four lakes in Prescott create the ideal setting for practicing paddling or a scenic lake view walk or ride.  The four seasons and year round sunshine (over 300 days a year), make Prescott the ideal spot for the outdoor enthusiast college student.

So where do locals go to find their daily news?  The Prescott Daily Courier is the local resource for daily news in the Prescott Quad City area,  This daily publication has been around for over 100 years in this area!  My Grandfather had a weekly column and it is such a treasure to read his old articles.  My Grandmother saved every one!  Here is a link to one that was adapted by a local writer recently.

The Prescott Daily Courier is the only paper serving our county reaching over 18,000 copies sold or delivered during the week and over 21,000 on the weekend.  There are approximately 2.3 readers per copy so the readership of the paper is approximately double those numbers.

As a child, my favorite pastimes were biking around the rolling hills of the subdivision, hiking on community and national forest trails easily accessed from the Timber Ridge area, swimming year round in the indoor and outdoor pools offered to the community residents and learning to play tennis! Timber Ridge was originally developed in the early 1980’s. My father, a local builder in Prescott, crafted several homes and town homes in this subdivision. When one of the homes he built didn’t sell, we got to move in! Some of my best friends still to this day are from my time growing up in Timber Ridge.

Preparing your Prescott area home for sale

When selling your home, the first step is to prepare the home for listing.  This means to “tidy up” the home, yard and do any maintenance projects that improve the appearance of the home.  All of these activities are optional when putting your Prescott Area home on the market however, a clean home which is nicely maintained is most likely to show well and sell quicker than a home which is not.  Now, if you are interested in preparing your home for sale, read on!

Many homeowners simply need to clean their windows and deep clean their home to prepare it to be listed.  Here are some additional ideas to help “stage” your home to show well.

1. Clear kitchen countertops and “de-clutter” other public spaces. This helps to make the room appear larger as there is less for the eye to get distracted by.
2. Re-arrange or remove paintings, pictures, drapes and decor that may be outdated or to simplfy a room.  Pack these items in moving boxes as you will be moving soon anyway and streamlining each room will help your home to show nicely.
3. Patch and paint walls if necessary.
4. Remove any lingering odors in the home.
5. Remove any dead plants, weeds and clear patios of toys.  Straighten outdoor furniture.
6. Prune bushes and trees and make sure they dont block windows or doors.
7. Mow lawn or rake rocks to look neatly taken care of.
8. Remove any garbage from lot/yard.
9. Plant inexpensive fresh flowers in pots for color (hint: you can take the pots with you to your new home as long as they are not affixed to the ground, and in the meantime they spruce up your Prescott home landscaping!)
10. Check gutters and roof for dry rot and make sure they are swept and clean.

More re-arranging tips:

1. Keep decorative items in groupings of one, three or five items on furniture.  For instance if you have four figurines, remove one and pack away for your new home.  Odd numbers of decorative items grouped together on a piece of furniture or on the wall create the most visual appeal.
2. Do some minimizing in the bathroom.  Coordinate towels to one or two colors.  Store toilet brush and extra toilet paper in a cabinet.
3. Generally, rooms with less furniture in them look larger.  Remove a few furniture items and get them ready to move.

Many ask about the climate in Prescott, AZ.  Having lived in Prescott for over 30 years, I know our climate well.  We have four seasons, which is so enjoyable.  Contrary to popular belief, not all of AZ is a desert.

Winter in Prescott, AZ

Prescott is located at about one mile high (yes, same is Denver, CO) in the Bradshaw Mountain range. This affords us the occasional snowfall, yes but the sunny days that follow, melt that snow away in a few days.  Days are typically cool with clear blue skies and freezing nights are common.  We occasionally see a White Christmas, which is always exciting. On Christmas day in 2011, my family and I spent the afternoon hiking outdoors with a light jacket on.

Spring in Prescott, AZ

Spring usually sees cold weather through April. At least a few snowfalls come each spring in Prescott.  Storms usually bring wind but as mentioned before, windy, snowy storms in Prescott do not usually linger long.  By May, temperatures during the days start noticeably warming.  Evenings are still cool until June when summer has almost arrived.

Though our summers can reach the 90′s, that time of year doesn’t last long.  Days consist mostly of dry, warm weather in early summer.  Gradually as July approaches, monsoon season starts brining afternoon rain showers that are usually lovely and sometimes torrential!  Even when temperatures are hot during the day, each night cools off nicely in the Prescott area and you may want a light jacket for evening outings.

Fall in Prescott, AZ

Just when you have decided you are tired of the warmth of the late summer, the beautiful fall sets in and the trees in the surrounding Prescott National Forest show their colors.  Most are pines so the show isn’t as amazing as some Aspen tree forests I have seen but none the less, still impressive. Fall weather is usually beautiful in Prescott with perfectly warm days and nights beginning to turn cool.  Your garden will look its best in Prescott in August and September, as the frost usually comes in October.  By October, the first of the early winter storms are beginning to visit.  Jackets are usually advised for visitors in October.  By Thanksgiving time, the weather is usually cool during the days and cold at night.  I can remember very warm Thanksgivings as well as Turkey in the snow, so it varies on the year.
